Oh my God, there’s another one.
So, what happened here? Some tv executive in the 1970s said, “Picture it: Shirley Bassey singing show tunes in various maritime locations — It can’t miss”? Things were weird before cable, people.
I’d go with Kate & Allie. Maybe this answer is a bit of a cheat, since Kate and Allie were not spouses, but divorced best friends raising their children together in a West Village townhouse, but the point of the show was that they had created a new kind of family for themselves. Though Kate and Allie weren’t lesbians, the show’s premise was still pretty revolutionary: Who needs a man when you have a best friend? Their relationship even paralleled a traditional marriage—Kate worked as a travel agent, while Allie stayed at home and did the cooking and cleaning. The best parts of the show were the little vignettes that opened each episode, where Kate and Allie would wander the streets of New York making witty observations. They were both just so cool (especially Kate), and the show never made them seem sad or desperate or lame because they weren’t married. Kate and Allie made single parenting seem like one long sleepover party. - Meredith Blake

Wow, Felix Unger was the gayest character on ’70s tv, huh? Also: how did the creators of “The Odd Couple” not sue the creators of “Frasier” for Niles Crane?!
Television’s finest very special hour.
Bloopers don’t usually make me laugh, but I crack up every single time at this.
